Craniosacral FAQ

Craniosacral Questions & Answers

What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a non-invasive, hands-on therapy that enhances the body’s own natural capacity for healing. The treatment can have a positive effect on nearly every system in the body, encouraging the body to release deeply held patterns of physical or emotional dysfunction that it has been unable to overcome on its own. Who would benefit from Craniosacral Therapy?

Everyone! Being extremely gentle and non-invasive, Craniosacral Therapy is suitable for all ages, from newborns to the elderly (even those with arthritis or osteoporosis, or other conditions that may prohibit more invasive treatments). People may seek Craniosacral therapy for acute physical problems, such as neck or back pain, or headaches, or may be looking for relief from more chronic longer-standing complaints, both physical and emotional.

Other people may be looking for help with stress relief, to help meet the challenges of their busy lives, to help increase their energy levels, for overall well-being, or just for a chance to get some inner calmness and peace!

How much training do Craniosacral Therapists have?

Craniosacral Therapists will have completed a 1 or 2 year course, depending on the format (full or part-time). Dr Tracy Dixon DC CST attended the first, the largest and the most established college of Craniosacral Therapy in London (CCST), gaining a Diploma in Craniosacral Therapy in 2018. The training at CCST presents a unique all-encompassing approach of Craniosacral Integration, combining Biodynamics, Biomechanics, and Mindfulness, to provide a broad-spectrum training approach.

An integrated approach to CST, incorporating both biodynamics and biomechanical principles, enables a highly effective response to each patient according to their needs. In addition, Dr Tracy Dixon DC CST also has all her clinical experience as a Chiropractor, with her deep understanding of anatomy and physiology, to underpin all her treatments.

Do I need to be referred by my GP to see a Craniosacral Therapist?

No. Patients will usually come through self-referral and recommendation. If you have a medical concern that requires consultation with your GP, a Craniosacral Therapist will always recommend this.

At what age can I first bring my baby for treatment?

Craniosacral Therapy is safe right from the moment a baby is born. However, if Craniosacral Therapy is received during pregnancy, the baby is already receiving the benefits of CST by treating the nurturing environment in which the baby is growing and developing; in other words, treatment of babies can begin in the womb!

Is it safe to receive Craniosacral Therapy during pregnancy?

Absolutely! The 9-months of pregnancy are a very important time for any prospective new Mum to receive Craniosacral Therapy. Treatment during pregnancy enables the mother to feel more comfortable, maintains a greater sense of wellbeing, enhances general health, balance and mobility, thereby playing an important part in determining the nature of the birth process, creates a more settled, balanced and healthy environment in which the baby can grow, and helps to prepare the mother psychologically and emotionally for a relaxed and positive approach to birth and beyond.

Talako Therapies is very pleased to be able to offer treatment lying on your back (earlier stages), side-lying, sitting, or even on your front, with the use of the Belloost Pregnancy Pillow. Many Mums-to-be miss being able to lie on their tummies during pregnancy, but treatment at Talako Therapies on the Belloost Pregnancy Pillow ensures you can be certain of a very comfortable and relaxing treatment, whatever stage of your pregnancy.

Where can I park when I come to Talako Therapies?

It is extremely important that people who come for treatment with us can park easily and right outside the door. Talako Therapies has ample off-road parking so you will not need to leave home an extra 15-minutes earlier just to ensure you can find somewhere to park!

Can anyone have Craniosacral therapy, even those with on-going medical conditions?

Yes! Craniosacral Therapy can work alongside the relationship you have with your doctor, as well as with other complimentary and mainstream therapies. It is not intended to replace medical treatment provided by your GP or other healthcare provider, but to work alongside other treatment modalities to enhance the healing process.

Can I get Craniosacral Therapy through my private medical insurance?

Western Provident Association (WPA) currently offers private health insurance that covers Craniosacral Therapy.

When was Craniosacral Therapy first established?

Craniosacral Therapy has its roots in the nineteenth century, originating from the work and research of an American Osteopath Dr William Sutherland. This led to the practice of cranial osteopathy, with osteopath John Upledger developing Craniosacral Therapy in the 1970’s.

Where does the name “Talako” come from?

“Talako” is a Native American word for “Eagle”, hence the appearance of this bird in the Talako logo. It has several significant personal meanings to Dr Tracy Dixon DC CST but the Eagle symbol reflects much about Craniosacral Therapy itself. The eagle conveys the powers and messages of the spirit, and it is man’s connection to the divine because it flies higher than any other bird, yet despite its magnificent ability to fly, it stays connected to the earth. Eagle totems inspire you to reach higher and become more than you think you are capable of. Spread those wings and fly, the future holds possibilities that you may not yet be able to see!
